USFK Bastards Out Now!!
You
will hear this protest anthem on many of the videos of
peaceful and violent protests against the US in South Korea.
My Korean language skills are intermediate at best, but I
believe from looking around the song was first used by
Hanchongryon - which is a farther left, radical university
student group with a long history of what you can only call
pro-North Korean activity. They are true believers
that North Korea is not as bad as the "propaganda" has made
it out to be, and they believe the United States, in Korea,
has been much worse. And unlike the average South
Korea, they really do want USFK out - now.
However, the average South Korea does share many of the same
basic thoughts concerning the US-SK relationship as the
Hanchongryon types. The average SK does not really,
truly in their heart believe North Korea is anything but
despotic, which sets them far apart from the radical
students, but they both agree on US-SK issues like "colonial
trade pressure," the Kwangju Massacre being America's fault, the
colonization of Korea by Japan being America's fault, the
period of authoritarian rulers in South Korea being all
America's fault, the Cheju Massacre, blocking unification,
killing several Korean bargirls each year, committing wanton
mayhem in the South without getting punished by a court of
law, and so on.
I
translated part of this song and another blogger
from Finland very kindly added his expert Korean
to the rest of it.
